Learning Expectations

Through the successful completion of a qualifying big mas costume, according to specific activities outlined below, the following learning outcomes are expected to be realized in our participating youth.

The use of art education and experience to foster appreciation for visual and performance arts

Increased experience in completing the design process, the transformation of ideas and drawings into a complex structural piece

Conception, design and performance of  the mas piece handled by youth, with planning and construction completed under the guidance of industry professionals

Increased the understanding that art plays a critical role in cultural creation and definition and reflects cultural/social change

Students are introduced to Caribana and taken on a historical journey through the development of Trinidad Carnival, the festival on which Caribana is based

Increased understanding of the complexity of artistic expression

Images of several mas pieces will be shown and participants asked to infer their theme/concept/overall meaning

Increased ability to apply the elements and principles of design and use appropriate 3-dimensional media to create an original sculptural piece

Youth will use diverse materials to satisfy both structural and aesthetic needs of big mas piece

Increased development of highly-transferable skills

Strengthened skills in the following areas:

Technical

Participants will be exposed to and carry out popular methods in mas construction using safe, simple tools in the mas-making process (textile techniques, pattern-cutting and sewing, molding, carving, etc.), while under adult supervision

Communication, Leadership, Teamwork

Youth will be assigned responsibilities and required to communicate effectively with team members while working collaboratively to complete the mas piece, and with the public in outreach activities

Creative, Problem-solving, Critical-thinking, Decision-making

Exercised during the conceptualization, design, planning, construction, performance, evaluation and outreach phases

Positive personal growth

Development of personal and career interests

Exposure to and participation in multidisciplinary practices including aspects of project management, crafting, outreach, etc.

Promotion of positive attitudes and personality attributes including self-discipline, diligence, perseverance, a collaborative spirit, etc.

Working with others to complete a project under time-limited circumstances

Increased self-esteem and pride for effort and accomplishment

Participate in and observe the display/performance of mas piece at select public Caribana events

Community reinforcement

Fostering of positive relationships between participants and adult community members through mentorship

Youth will be assisted in various activities by passionate individuals with similar interests and backgrounds

Throughout the program, youth contribute to forums alongside cultural, youth and community advocates

Cultural Promotion

Increased cultural understanding and appreciation among Caribbean and non-Caribbean ethnics through outreach
