Caribana is as much about the concept of community as anything else, and with that in mind, a big NBA star came home Tuesday to help one neighbourhood's Mas band in their seemingly-endless preparation for the big parade.
Camp Carnival was going strong in Scarborough's Malvern neighbourhood and while former Eastern Commerce and University of Kentucky centre Jamaal Magloire was hanging out trying to entertain the volunteers, more than a dozen youths were at the site working on one very intricate costume.
"Since I really like art, I like to create things and design things and this is a great opportunity to do that," said Camp Carnival participant Kayla Owen. "During the summer we don't really have a lot of things to do, so this helps us to be active and have fun."
Camp Carnival program coordinator Allisha Ali said it's all about fun and coming together, but it's also great for demonstrating the value of hard work.
"We want to promote the labour involved in creating the costumes and the arts behind it," she said. "It's important because youths need to be engaged and they need to be engaged in innovative ways."
And there's certainly plenty of innovation and engagment. Students spend three days a week working on the "Malvern Morphisis" costume, and to hear Magloire tell it, the program is a slam dunk.
"Idle time brings a lot of negativity and trouble, but if they're doing something that's constructive, they're able to learn and at the same time give back to the community," he said.
When the costume is done, it'll be put on display at the King and Queen of Caribana contest.
