Work Plan

OUR GOAL   »   To provide at-risk youth of Toronto with a novel, intensely engaging opportunity to gain invaluable practical artistic experience, facilitate personal growth, skill development, community reinforcement and promotion of the Caribbean culture through the creation of big mas.

Recruitment of mas practitioners to serve consultancy roles for duration of project

Recruitment of adult volunteers, active participants in Caribana festivities, to support youth in activities

To ensure program recipients are youth residing in under-resourced neighbourhoods of Scarborough

Advertisement in media and schools and promotion through local community groups

Program Delivery

»  Project Development, Implementation and Evaluation

To provide youth with an opportunity to control the design of a large art project

To induce intrinsic and instrumental value for art  through a youth-directed, collaborative art project

To provide necessary instruction and practice for the successful completion of a qualifying big mas piece

Workshops begin with sessions covering the foundation and elements of mas production:

The origin and history of Caribana

Goals, process and design strategies in mas-making

Description of timeline

Development of mas concept/theme

Completion of design illustration

[Sourcing of materials]

All aspects of mas construction:  textile techniques, pattern-cutting and sewing, molding, carving, etc.

[Completion of mas piece]

Costume animation

Evaluation of mas piece
